Luminous Red Variable Star
We report photometry and spectroscopy of the evolution of Nova Sagittarii 1994 #1 (V4332 Sagittarii) during outburst. We compare the photometric and spectral evolution of this outburst to known classes of outbursts – including classical novae and outbursts occurring on symbiotic stars – and find this object does not conform to any known class of outburst. The closest match to the behavior of th...
متن کاملV838 Monocerotis: the central star and its environment a decade after outburst
Aims. V838 Monocerotis erupted in 2002, brightened in a series of outbursts, and eventually developed a spectacular light echo. A very red star emerged a few months after the outburst. The whole event has been interpreted as the result of a merger. Methods. We obtained near-IR and mid-IR interferometric observations of V838Mon with the AMBER and MIDI recombiners located at the Very Large Telesc...
متن کاملInterferometric Observations of V838 Monocerotis
We have used long-baseline near-IR interferometry to resolve the peculiar eruptive variable V838 Mon and to provide the first direct measurement of its angular size. Assuming a uniform disk model for the emission we derive an apparent angular diameter of 1.83±0.06 milli-arcseconds. For a nominal distance of 8 ± 2 kpc, this implies a linear radius of 1570 ± 400R⊙. However, the data are somewhat ...
متن کاملOn the progenitor of V838 Monocerotis
We summarize and analyze the available observational data on the progenitor and the enviroment of V838 Mon, the object that erupted in January 2002. We show that the radio and infrared observed matter in the vicinity of V838 Mon could not have its origin in mass loss from V838 Mon but is of interstellar origin. Also from the light echo evolution we conclude that the reflecting dust is of the sa...
متن کاملNear-infrared Water Lines in V838 Monocerotis
V838 Monocerotis had an intriguing, nova-like outburst in 2002 January that has subsequently led to several studies of the object. It is now recognized that the outburst of V838 Mon and its evolution are different from those of a classical nova or other classes of well-known eruptive variables. V838 Mon, along with two other objects that have analogous properties, appears to make up a new class...
